"The simple network management protocol (SNMP) forms
part of the Internet protocol suite as defined by the
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). More
specifically, it is a Layer 7 or Application Layer
protocol that is used by network management systems
for monitoring network-attached devices for conditions
that warrant administrative attention."

In 1995, the authors of Westhawk's SNMP stack had the idea that the new platform, Java might make the porting and installing of the manager code simpler in the future. Despite doubts regarding low-level UDP networking and the quality of the graphics expressed by some at the time, this was the start of the SNMP stack in Java. Westhawk's stack offers the user an easy and clear Java implementation of SNMP. The library is totally flexible in the way it can be programmed, which enables users to send different requests pertinent to their specific requirements. The stack supports SNMPv3 and IPv6. Westhawk's SNMP stack is FREE and the source code and documentation is included in the distribution. We also run mailing lists to provide information about the stack and we can provide consultancy to support bespoke implementation for clients who require it. Open Source
"Open-source software is computer software whose
source code is available under a copyright license
that permits users to study, change, and improve the
software, and to redistribute it in modified or
unmodified form. It is the most prominent example of
open source development."

Westhawk have developed a number of pieces of software, including SNMP, which are available as freeware / open source to users worldwide. Like the users of our software, we appreciate the opportunity to use and experiment with freeware and open source software. Therefore Westhawk emphasise the importance of ensuring that a contribution is made to the open source / freeware community. |

"Alternative Management Technology
(www.altmantech.com)
specialize in
SNMP-based network discovery.
AMT's Network Ferret, a Java-based discovery engine, is embedded in management products that do fault, performance and security management and even factory floor management. While network discovery seems like a simple problem, the reality is that vendors do not follow standards and much time is spent analyzing devices and coding in exceptions to the standards. AMT uses Westhawk's SNMP stack because it is a solid stack with a wide user base and they did not want to spend valuable time writing their own. Just as AMT's customers use Network Ferret rather than spending valuable resources writing and maintaining their own discovery engine." (Bob Kostes - AMT) |
