Asterisk delivers VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) in many protocols, and can be integrated with most standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware. The IAX protocol used by Asterisk only requires one port to be open, therefore it is easier to configure with the firewall than SIP and potentially more secure.
